The statistics subject was taught by the mathematics faculty members, right from the inception of the mathematics department in 1954. The mathematics department offers B.Sc. (Mathematics) as the main subject and Statistics and Physics as ancillary subjects, and B.A. (Mathematics) as the main subject and Statistics and Economics as ancillary subjects. The Andhra Pradesh State government introduced three major subject systems in its undergraduate programs in 1988. In the year 1991, the department of statistics started its activities with two faculty members to teach statistics for B.Sc. (Mathematics, Statistics, Physics), and B.A. (Mathematics, Statistics, Economics). Later on, with the growing demand for statistics, the department offers B.Sc. (Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science), B.Sc. (Big Data Analytics), B.Sc. (Artificial Intelligence), B.Sc. (Computer Science, Statistics, Economics), and B.Sc. (Statistics, Computer Science, Accountancy). Again, the Government of Andhra Pradesh has initiated the implementation of National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 during the academic year 2023–24 with major and minor subjects at the undergraduate level. Presently, the department offers the NEP 2020 curriculum for statistics major and minor students.
At present, the department has six teaching faculty, with two hundred students studying second and third year, and under NEP 2020, sixty students are studying statistics as their major and one hundred and eighty-eight students as their minor subject.
